The traditional parallel offset roughing tool path is far less efficient than VoluMill.  Consequently, the cut depths, speeds, and feeds used in the traditional roughing operations are not the best values to be used for VoluMill operations.  However, a solid understanding of volumetric milling and high speed milling will allow the user to calculate conservative starting VoluMill parameters from traditional parameters that have proven reliable.

During milling, a tool cannot work efficiently if the speed is not increased with lighter step overs.  Conventional milling practices recommend surface speed based on material type, but light step over settings typically used with high speed milling requires much higher speeds to work efficiently.  Consequently, even in the same material, speed needs to be adjusted appropriately for a given step over.

The load generated by chip formation varies throughout the cut.  The maximum force is where the cutting edge of the tool first enters the material and decreases to zero when the tool rotates out of the cut.  Chin thinning occurs when step over is less than half the tool diameter, and this requires an adjustment to the feed per tooth so that maximum chip thickness is retained.
